The Republic of Cyprus is a member of the European Union since May 2004. Although the country's flag depicts the whole island, note that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (a state that declared independence in 1983 and is recognized only by Turkey) in the north of the isle is not a member of the EU, nor are the United Kingdom sovereign bases of Akrotiri and Dhekelia in the island.
